Rubber Seal Applications

O rings, seals and sealing systems can all benefit from the use of a lubricant to aid assembly and to eliminate pinching and unwanted friction, enhancing their sealing performance and reducing wear.

The use of rubber seals creates problems for quality and efficiency in today’s demanding industries and reduction in assembly time and the elimination of noise is of primary concern to design engineers.

To solve these problems the friction coefficient must be lowered to:-

  • Ease assembly

  • Assure that the seal is seated properly without tension that may cause premature wear, or defective sealing

  • Eliminate the risk of rupture (as with the Fluorosilicone)

  • Eliminate stick-slip concerns (noise and squeaks) where micro tapping is present.

Both water and solvent based rubber compatible products are available from IKV.

The choice of product depends on the desired endurance, the risk of contact with dust, and the transfer of product associated with handling. The film created is barely visible but many products are available with the UV tracer material so that it can be detected and monitored on the assembly line.

Plastic Compatible Lubricants

IKV manufacture a full range of special oils and greases for all plastics including Polycarbonate & ABS. These are used in a diverse range of applications from bearings & bushes to linkages & pivots where compatibility of the lubricant is critical.

Rubber & Plastic Seal Applications

IKV has developed low friction coatings for the following applications:

  • Assembly aid for O-ring seals
  • Bearing seals
  • Lip seals for gear boxes
  • Rubber sheet stock handling

The range of water based products either cure at ambient temperature or may be thermo hardened.

They may be applied by spraying, sponging/wiping, or dipping.

They are adapted to each type of material depending on its elasticity, the aspect constraints, the abrasion, and friction.

The advantage that these products offer over a wax based products is that they are permanently fixed and cannot be displaced assuring a perfect seal.

The IKV Filmsec range of products offers an effective alternative to silicone emulsions that are no longer permitted in the automotive industry.

Most products are manufactured from fully synthetic base products including polyglycols, perfluorinated fluids, PTFE and other dry film lubricants. Some are solvent based and others are water based offering a product to match the requirements of the application.

They are available as fluids, greases, gels and dry film lubricants with variable concentrations and performances according to the needs of the application, the material, surface type and finish.

Many of our products meet the requirements of automobile manufacturers and suppliers, to ease the assembly of hoses, seals, grommets,  suspension bushings, exhaust mounts,  tyre valves and other troublesome parts.

IKV-FILMSEC 1010 is a dispersion of tetrafluoroethylene telomers in isopropyl alcohol.

After evaporation of the solvent, it remains as a white and waxy lubricant, which with its high content in fluorine, exhibits the following properties:

  • Outstanding lubricity

  • Excellent thermal stability

  • A high degree of chemical inertness

  • Non flammability

  • Insoluble

  • Excellent nonstick and separation qualities

  • Reduces the friction coefficient of the substrate

To obtain a stronger adhesion of the coating to its substrate, it is ideal to oven bake the treated part for 5 to10 minutes at 305 to 310 °C.

IKV- FILMSEC 1010 may be applied pure or diluted, depending on the desired effect. The product is also available in aerosol form.

Typical applications include:

  • Release of plastics and rubber parts

  • Sizing of sintered metal parts

  • Dry film lubrication

  • Metal working (extrusion, rolling, cutting)

  • Additive in waxes and polishes for skis, auto bodies, and  boat hulls

  • Masking (protecting surfaces) for paint or varnish application

  • Additive for elastomers and paints.

IKV-FILMSEC 1084 is a dry film that was developed as a long lasting surface treatment with the base functions of Lamellar hexagonal graphite.

In normal conditions a very light coat is applied, creating a film inferior to 20 micron. A thick coat will have a much longer drying time and may cause the product to run, reducing its adherence. During frictional contact the product is transformed into a stabilized and durable leaf of protection.

IKV-FILMSEC 1084 comes in an aerosol and may be applied in the same manner as spray paint. This product is also available in bulk. The surfaces to be treated must be completely degreased and clean before application. The presence of silicone products, even in small amounts may cause adherence problems.

IKV-FILMSEC 1084 may be applied to all surfaces that are compatible with ethanol. To improve adherence the materials surfaces may be roughened by sand or glass bead blasting, chemically, using the appropriate product.

IKV-FILMSEC 1084 is recommended for the following applications.

  • Pre-treatment of forge and stamping dies.

  • Foundry - mould start-up with light and copper alloys, for gravity or die-casting.

  • Glass Works - mould start-up.

  • Assembly lubricant for threaded parts.

  • Lubrication of slow moving parts, or high temperature.

  • Protects surfaces that are in contact against fretting corrosion.

  • Lubrication in humid environments.

(Please note: the IKV Filmsec 1080 product in aerosols form has been replaced by IKV Filmsec 1084 aerosol.  The difference between IKV Filmsec 1080 & IKV Filmsec 1084 is that the aerosol formulation no longer contains dichloromethane as part of the solvent mix. This was eliminated due to environmental issues. The elimination of this ingredient does not affect the material applied or its appearance & the performance of this product has not changed. Please contact us for the technical data sheet & safety data).

IKV-FILMSEC 1035-60 is an air drying, water based dispersion of soft, waxy particles of low molecular weight, low friction PTFE that have been specifically developed for their excellent lubricity and release properties.

This high performance dry film lubricant offers an alternative to traditional lubricants in situations where maximum friction reduction or cosmetic appearance is a priority. Easily applied, the almost clear coloured film goes on cleanly without smearing or migrating and adheres well to most material substrates. After evaporation of the carrier (water), a dry film, waxy lubricant coating is left which due to its high fluorine content, has the following properties:

•    Excellent lubrication
•    Low coefficient of friction
•    Non stick properties
•    Thermal stability
•    Chemically inert

IKV-FILMSEC 1035-60 can be used either as supplied or diluted further according to the required coating thickness and the application. Spraying, wiping or immersion are the preferred application methods for this coating.

Typical applications include :

•    Mould release of plastic or rubber components
•    Calibration/sizing of sintered metal parts
•    Coating for anodised aluminium components
•    Dry film lubrication, plastics, metals, rubber…
•    Metal forming, extrusion, rolling, cutting
•    Protection or masking of parts against  adhesion of varnish, resin, paint or other coatings

IKV manufacture a range of specialist lubricants which can be used as assembly aids or as a temporary friction modifier in order to help components slide more easily together whilst not affecting their performance after assembly. Some of these products are available in aerosol or spray form to allow the application of a thin film accurately applied only where required. The products have been designed with the following properties:

•    Ease of application

•    Compatibility with plastics, rubbers and paints

•    Reduction in the coefficient of friction aids smooth, stick-slip free movement

•    Temporary, semi-permanent or permanent effect, depending upon application requirement.

Components such as rubber hoses, plastic bushes and o rings all can benefit from a thin film of lubricant to reduce the surface coefficient of friction and allow smooth, effortless assembly and movement whilst also ensuring better sealing and performance whilst fitted. Insertion/assembly forces can be significantly reduced helping to alleviate the need for expensive jigs and also eliminating potential for RSI (repetitive strain injury) where repeated operations are necessary.

This range of products has been developed to aid the assembly or fitting of components made of rubber, plastic or other difficult to assemble materials.

IKV-LUB PE 1731 is a gel containing synthetic oil with a very high viscosity index. Its thickener gives this gel a remarkable thixotropic effect at all temperatures. It is compatible with ALL types of gaskets and seals, fluorocarbon, EPDM and NBR— up to 80C.

IKV-LUB PE 1731 has been developed as an assembly aid for rubber parts but can also be used for other materials including some plastics once compatibility has been ensured. Its structure eliminates its risk of dripping and permits the precise application of small amounts in the entry points, which is then spread to the interior when the two parts are intersected and slid together. IKV-LUB PE 1731 is also suitable for the release of hoses from their chucks after vulcanisation.

IKV-LUB PE 14 is a low concentration PFPE fluid used to aid the assembly of rear lights and panel seals in the automotive industry. It is non-grease, does not migrate or creep, does not attract dust and dirt and avoids staining. Temperature range -40 to 180°C.

IKV FLUOR 103 MX 5 is an economical alternative to IKV-LUB PE 14. Temperature range -40 to 180°C.

IKV LUB PE 141-14 is a high concentration PFPE fluid used to aid the assembly of rear lights and panel seals in the automotive industry. It allows parts which have been in storage for a long time to be easily fitted. Temperature range -40 to 180°C.
