PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) Coatings

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene (CF2CF2) that finds numerous applications. It is a thermosetting plastic with a high melting point that is used to produce ‘nonstick’ surfaces on pans and to coat bearings. The most well known brand name of PTFE is Teflon by DuPont Co.

PTFE is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high-molecular-weight compound consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. PTFE is hydrophobic: neither water nor water-containing substances wet PTFE, as fluorocarbons demonstrate mitigated London dispersion forces due to the high electronegativity of fluorine. PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction against any solid.

PTFE is used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. It is very non-reactive, partly because of the strength of carbon–fluorine bonds, and so it is often used in containers and pipework for reactive and corrosive chemicals. Where used as a lubricant, PTFE reduces friction, wear, and energy consumption of machinery.

IKV Lubricants has been a leader in the field of high performance lubricants for many years & has met the increasing demands for tribological products that meet the requirements of the industries OEM’s.

IKV’s strategy consists of continuous research and on-going development supporting the industries design engineers by offering innovative tribological solutions.

IKV's quick reacting team, along with its capability to develop new products to meet a customer brief or application, make it a leader in its field. These products are available as greases, oils, pastes or dry coatings and are state-of-the-art solutions in the field of lubrication for long life, friction and wear reduction.

To accomplish this IKV uses a wide range of materials suitable for their tribological properties as well as for their compatibility or inertness with other materials. The result is a range of products containing approximately 500 formulations, which are capable of solving most all tribological problems encountered.

IKV realises the products must also meet application requirements and has, therefore, adapted its packaging to meet these requirements. IKV is part of a group, which has been in existence for nearly 100 years, a staff of 250 dedicated employees and a fully equipped in house laboratory with the latest equipment and a large production facility.

Although IKV Group already has a large range of proven products it prides itself on its ability to develop new products to meet the growing demands for excellence in industry.

IKV's quality management system guarantees its customers a perfect match between the properties of the products supplied and specific demands. This system has ISO 9001 vs 2000 accreditation.

IKV-FILMSEC 1035-60 is an air drying, water based dispersion of soft, waxy particles of low molecular weight, low friction PTFE that have been specifically developed for their excellent lubricity and release properties.

This high performance dry film lubricant offers an alternative to traditional lubricants in situations where maximum friction reduction or cosmetic appearance is a priority. Easily applied, the almost clear coloured film goes on cleanly without smearing or migrating and adheres well to most material substrates. After evaporation of the carrier (water), a dry film, waxy lubricant coating is left which due to its high fluorine content, has the following properties:

•    Excellent lubrication
•    Low coefficient of friction
•    Non stick properties
•    Thermal stability
•    Chemically inert

IKV-FILMSEC 1035-60 can be used either as supplied or diluted further according to the required coating thickness and the application. Spraying, wiping or immersion are the preferred application methods for this coating.

Typical applications include :

•    Mould release of plastic or rubber components
•    Calibration/sizing of sintered metal parts
•    Coating for anodised aluminium components
•    Dry film lubrication, plastics, metals, rubber…
•    Metal forming, extrusion, rolling, cutting
•    Protection or masking of parts against  adhesion of varnish, resin, paint or other coatings.

IKV-FILMSEC 1010 is a dispersion of PTFE (tetrafluoroethylene telomers) in isopropyl alcohol.
After evaporation of the solvent, it remains as a white and waxy lubricant, which with its high content in fluorine, exhibits the following properties:
-    Outstanding lubricity
-    Excellent thermal stability
-    A high degree of chemical inertness
-    Non flammability
-    Insoluble
-    Excellent nonstick and separation qualities
-    Reduces the friction coefficient of the substrate

To obtain a stronger adhesion of the coating to its substrate, it is ideal to oven bake the treated part for 5 to10 minutes at 305 to 310 °C.

IKV- FILMSEC 1010 may be applied pure or diluted, depending on the desired effect. The product is also available in aerosol form.
Typical applications include:
-    Release of plastics and rubber parts
-    Sizing of sintered metal parts
-    Dry film lubrication
-    Metal working (extrusion, rolling, cutting)
-    Additive in waxes and polishes for skis, auto bodies, and  boat hulls
-    Masking (protecting surfaces) for paint or varnish application
-    Additive for elastomers and paints.

Our BESLUX FLUOR TF is also a PTFE dry film lubricant containing low molecular weight PTFE.
It provides a thin film & offers very high adhesivity on metallic and plastic surfaces. The dried film then provides protection against mechanical stress, oxydation and most chemicals. It also provides high temperature resistance (up to 300°C). It can also be used as a release agent for any type of plastic, rubber and elastomer.
